Expertise

Ali Sonday is a Senior Associate at Fairbridges Wertheim Becker, specialising in employment law and related commercial litigation. Admitted as an attorney in 2022, Ali advises a diverse range of clients including corporate entities, individuals, government bodies and educational institutions on all aspects of employment law and compliance.

Ali’s core expertise lies in employment-related matters, with a particular focus on litigation involving restraints of trade, reviews, and business transfers. He regularly drafts workplace policies and procedures, employment contracts, and provides advice on disciplinary and dismissal procedures (including the chairing such enquiries), employment restructuring and retrenchment procedures, unfair dismissals, and unfair labour practices. He also delivers strategic legal opinions on employment legislation and regulatory compliance.

In addition to his employment law practice, Ali has a growing specialisation in privacy and data protection. He advises clients on compliance with applicable legislation and assists in developing internal policies to ensure regulatory adherence. He also represents clients in a range of commercial disputes.

In 2024, Ali secured a significant victory in a Section 197A transfer dispute, with the Constitutional Court refusing leave to appeal. The case strengthened employee protections during liquidation and restructuring, reinforcing his growing reputation in complex employment litigation.

Methodology

In every matter, especially in litigation or employment disputes, Ali prioritises strategic, cost-effective outcomes over drawn-out legal battles. By conducting a clear-eyed risk assessment upfront, he helps clients understand their real prospects and often recommends settlement as the smarter move. While others may be quick to litigate, Ali’s focus is on resolving matters efficiently, protecting both the client’s resources and long-term interests. Clients value Ali’s analytical insight, well-reasoned legal advice, and clear communication. His proactive and solutions-focused approach ensures tailored, compliant, and commercially viable outcomes for clients navigating complex employment issues.
